Excellent I have lots of the old books too from the 90s. I was at a thrift store and hit the jackpot. I love the art and hate the way Disney didn't roll with them, erased from canon then they ripped the ideas anyway

This book set up Roland “leaving the Horn” as THE pivotal moment that keeps Roland in the loop. Every tragedy can point the reader back to one critical mistake, one lapse of judgment that leads to the hero’s tragic end. The scene was discussed so long ago, I can’t remember what lesson Roland ignored or what fatal character flaw was exposed by deciding to just leave it.

They pronounce it (Rah-Deek) in the audiobook. It's an awesome story. Maul is well written and everything you want him to be in violent measure.

I only have a couple of complaints with this book. Firstly, THAT SCENE. I get where King was going with it but he didn’t have to explain it with that kind of scene. Second would be the ending. The ending just felt like it was a let down, especially with all the build up. And lastly, would be when we suddenly switch perspectives to Bill’s wife and Tom. I didn’t need to see what they were up to and about the only character I cared about from that Chapter was Henry

I love seeing these old editions, also your comment about the Expanded Universe being "Canon Fodder" was excellent. Disney does not have the authority to say that something George Lucas authorised is not canon and the proof is in the quality of the imagination of the EU which far surpasses the Disney Sequel trilogy.

I would definitely recommend not reading them in chronological order as a first run. I would start with the Zahn novels, Heir to the Empire trilogy and if you enjoy those there are other series before and after that that are good

I ALSO cried when Eddie dies. I was almost inconsolable when Oy goes out. He's angry that he has to. He knows he's going to. I am here and there on my opinion of this novel...But I don't begrudge King the deaths of the Ka- Tet. He has always "killed his darlings" The end, with the drawer guy, is weird. It's King all the way, but it's not very satisfying, and King usually gives the Satisfying Win. Roland is just shooting at Sneetches, splayed legs, while a guy he met 15 minute ago literally erases the guy from existence? I took King at his word. For two years, I never read the end of the book, after King warned me off. I read it, eventually, and am okay with it...but it's a non ending. Why does it start there? (The iconic line is the best first line in any book ever, but...) Why doesn't it start with Roland remembering to pick up the horn? I don't think this series can be made into a show, and this is ultimately why YT popped these things up to me. The book is unfilmmable as it stands. (There is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY THEY'LL DO 'DETTA), but if you change the book to fit it into the mores of today, it won't be King. I read The Gunslinger in 1985. I was working at a fancy hotel in the Gift Shop, and I had to display ONE COPY of this book on a shelf. I stole it immediately. (39 years ago. I might be safe.). This series, as whacked as it may be, is tremendous....6 out of 7 books. (Song of Susannah mostly sux) Wind Thru The Keyhole doesn't. That book is shit, and just people hounding King til he wrote something extra.

“Elegant weapon for a more civilized age.” May be semantics, but he’s not claiming it’s a civilized weapon. He’d probably say there’s no such thing. But a lightsaber is cleaner than some of the deaths we see in, say, Andor. Thats a less elegant death, if such a thing exists

Back in 1974, a 50-year-old novel would have been "ancient" by popular culture standards and mostly only read in high school or college classrooms. In 2024, Carrie remains a popular culture icon and, if anything, is even more relevant today what with increased awareness of bullying and tragic incidents of bullied teens lashing out violently (Colimbine, etc.). That kind of cultural prescience and staying power is incredibly rare and, I would argue, is one of the marks of a truly great literary work.

Why are you punishing yourself for what George Lucas did? He sold it to Disney. And of course they where going to want to reign in the EU because it’s all over the place. There was a lot of terrible books and comics before the “Disney” empire took over. Remember only the dark side deals in absolutes!

good review man i'm currently reading it and i'm fighting to continue it because it's such a slow moving book now i liked the Mr. Bowditch shit that was well written and well done and vastly different than he normally would do i think, but on where i am Chapter #18 page #319 he still hasn't helped Radar yet i haven't started the chapter yet i took a break from reading. and so far i don't get why it's so loved? for me i am thinking a bot of 60's Doctor Who while i read the Fantasy stuff and that's not a bad thing cause i love 60's Doctor Who.

I actually really liked that this had those explanations of the force and such. It makes this an Issue #0. You can start reading here knowing literally nothing and it works. You can’t really watch “Episode ONE” first because there’s no real introduction to the characters and events and places. This makes it into a fine beginning. Something else I love is that all of the Legends books keep Sidious’ identity a secret. So this would allow someone to start here, ignore Plagueis until later, but start here and move forward and get the reveal all the way in Revenge of the Sith along with the Jedi. When I have kids one day, I think I might show them the OT and if they like it, just have them read the Legends novels like that as a social experiment on how well that reveal works if only it weren’t that we can see it’s the same actor lol
